These paintings represent a period of tremendous change for me. They were inspired by a handful of wedding photos taken in Japan from roughly 1900-1930. The tension and drama I saw in them lead me in a new direction with my work. In addition, this marked my transition from acrylic to oil paint, something that I will forever be glad for trying.
"Painting is sometimes like those recipes where you do all manner of elaborate things to a duck, and then end up putting it on one side and only using the skin."
– Lucian Freud
